This four-part lecture series aims to trace a basic institutional continuity in Russian historical development, from medieval Muscovy up until the attempted post-Soviet transition to a rules-based market economy. It will highlight a distinctive pendulum movement between reform and repression and argue that recurrent episodes of “authoritarian restoration” are driven by path dependence in deeply rooted norms that condition how political and economic actors behave. And it will make some comments on how social science has failed – very fundamentally – to understand what has been going on.

Professor. Stefan Peter Hedlund，上海外国语大学名誉教授，瑞典乌普萨拉大学俄罗斯与欧亚研究所教授。世界著名俄罗斯经济史和当代经济问题权威专家。
