Historical Developments and Current Trends in Chinese as a World Language in the United States: An Overview, Challenges & Opportunities

Shuhan C. Wang, Ph.D.

Since the 1950s, Chinese has been introduced to the United States (US) as a foreign language, but it had remained relatively small in terms of student enrollment or program establishment. From 2004 to 2014, however, the Chinese language field has experienced an unprecedented expansion in the US. What are the factors that have propelled its growth and what is the current status of the field? What are the infrastructural needs in order to support the quality, sustainability, and continued growth of the field? What strategies have been adopted to deal with the challenges associated with such a rapid expansion? What are the lessons learned from the US Chinese case? This talk will highlight some of the progress made in the Chinese language field in the US, analyze the issues associated with its expansion, and explore opportunities that could be capitalized in order to build a system of language learning and teaching.

Shuhan C. Wang, Ph.D. 王周淑涵is president of ELE Consulting International, which provides advisory, technical assistance, teacher professional development, curriculum and material development, and program evaluation to schools, districts, states, institutions of higher learning, organizations, businesses, or governments interested in heritage/world language education.
