讲座主题：FACE MANAGEMENT IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING

讲座内容：Face management embodies comprehensive interpersonal dynamics and explains how people in society use language and body language to manage rapport and to negotiate face needs with each other in order to achieve various interactional goals. Face management behaviour exhibited in the course of an interaction can reflect an interlocutor’s personality, attitude and intentions. In translation, how face management features are represented may impact on translation users’ interpretation of the interpersonal dynamics presented in the source text. Therefore, to provide sufficient support for translation users’ adequate comprehension, face management features must be correctly represented in the translation. To illustrate this, research on audience response to face management in Chinese-English subtitling will be presented to demonstrate the actual impact of the translation. In a similar vein, manipulation of face management features in interpreting activities may be used by interpreters as an effective means to take stance with parties and to achieve professional survival. Through the introduction of a Composite Model of Face Management and research projects on the representation of face in subtitling and press conference interpreting, this talk is intended to provide the audience good illustrations of the relevance and usefulness of incorporating sociolinguistic politeness in translation and interpreting research and training.
主讲人简介：Xiaohui Yuan is the Course Director of the MA Programme in Chinese–English Translation and Interpreting at the University of Nottingham in the UK. She supervises PhD research projects in the areas of translation and interpreting. Her research interests include audiovisual translation, literary translation, interpreting, and intercultural and cross-cultural pragmatics. She has won the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Research Networking Award in the UK.
