题目: American Journalism in Crisis

演讲人:Prof. Christopher Hanson

美国马里兰大学新闻学院教授

时间:2009年12月7日下午1点

地点:上外松江校区1252教室

主办:新闻传播学院

讲座内容简介:

Why should Americans believe what U.S. journalists report?

This is an increasingly serious question today. Changes in the economy and in information technology are eroding journalistic standards of accuracy and independence even in the most respected U.S. news outlets.  Many journalists around the world have looked to the best American and other Western journalism in shaping their own standards, so the ethical crisis in U.S. journalism has implications for newsrooms throughout the world.

In this lecture, Christopher Hanson, a professor of journalism ethics at the University of Maryland, USA, will discuss the causes of this crisis of standards, and possible solutions. He will address famous recent scandals, such as the case of Jayson Blair of The New York Times, who fabricated and plagiarized dozens of stories, humiliating the country's leading paper and bringing down its editor. He will talk about the devastating impact of the recession and the World Wide Web on newspapers that once set the ethical standards for the U.S. news business as a whole. And he will ask students in the audience to share their thoughts about news and journalism ethics in China.
