哈佛大学人类学系教授、上海外国语大学长江学者MichaelHerzfeld教授是当代国际人类学界最为活跃和多产的资深学者,是希腊、意大利、泰国等区域与国别研究的代表人物,在语言人类学、符号学、社会诗学、批判遗产学、视觉人类学等领域颇具造诣,出版区域国别人类学著作十一部,发表文章208篇,发表各类学术书评100余篇。MichaelHerzfeld教授擅长用人类学民族志的方法做欧洲研究与东南亚研究,他涉及的区域国家研究对当地的百姓与政府都产生了很大的影响,他的文化亲密性理论推进了学界对民众日常生活与国家机构之间动态关系的理解。当地媒体大量报道他的学术踪迹与他对当地生活、文化与政治的敏锐观察。Herzfeld教授深怀对社会边缘群体的关爱与支持,2017年初在《纽约时报》上发表了保护泰国巴帕素绵古堡的文章。出于对研究对象的尊重,Michael Herzfeld教授每去一个新的国家,都以谦卑的姿态进入,谦虚地学习当地的语言,以这样的方式,他熟练掌握英语、法语、希腊语、意大利语、泰语,能运用这五种语言自如交流、做学术报告、发表文章,他还具备德语、西班牙语、葡萄牙语的读写能力和基本的中文听说能力,目前正准备学习温州话。

Herzfeld教授同时也是6SSCI期刊的编委、专刊专家与十多家期刊的匿名评审,深谙英语学术写作之道,也帮助学生修改发表过不计其数的学术文章与高质量的学术书籍。Herzfeld教授所指导的博士生中荣获美国图书奖及各种学术写作大奖的就有近十位。

Introductionto the Speaker:

Michael Herzfeld isErnest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences in the Department of Anthropologyat Harvard University, where has taught since 1991, and is Director of the AsiaCenter’s Thai Studies Program at Harvard.  He is also HonoraryProfessorial Fellow in the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne; IIASVisiting Professor of Critical Heritage Studies, Leiden University; SeniorAdvisor, Critical Heritage Studies Initiative, International Institute of AsianStudies, Leiden; and Chang Jiang Scholar, Shanghai International StudiesUniversity.  He is the author of eleven books (most recently Siege of the Spirits: Community and Polityin Bangkok, 2016), two films (MontiMoments, 2007, and RomanRestaurant Rhythms, 2011), and numerous articles and reviews, and hishonors include the J.I. Staley Prize and the Rivers Memorial Medal (both in1994).  In addition to a D.Phil. from Oxford University (1976) and aD.Litt. from the University of Birmingham (1989), he holds honorary doctoratesfrom the Université Libre de Bruxelles (2005), the University of Macedonia,Thessaloniki (2011), and the University of Crete (2013), and has been named anHonorary Professor of Shandong University (P.R.C.) for 2013-2018 and of theSouthwestern University of Nationalities (Chengdu, P.R. China) for 2014-17. In the autumn of 2013 held a Visiting Fellowship at King’s College,Cambridge, and served as Visiting William Wyse Professor at CambridgeUniversity. A former president of the Modern Greek Studies Association and ofthe Society for the Anthropology of Europe, he is affiliated with theanthropology programs at Thammasat University, Bangkok and Università “LaSapienza,” Rome, and has held various visiting appointments at theuniversities of Manchester, Paris-X (Nanterre), Ecole des Hautes Etudes(Paris), Melbourne, Padova, Cagliari, Messina, and Malta.  A member of theeditorial boards of AmericanEthnologist, EthnologieFrançaise, and InternationalJournal of Heritage Studies and several other journals, he has servedas editor of American Ethnologist (1995-98)and is currently editor-at-large (responsible for “Polyglot Perspectives”)at Anthropological Quarterly. His research in Greece, Italy, and Thailand has most recently addressed thesocial and political impact of historic conservation and gentrification, thedynamics of nationalism and bureaucracy, and the ethnography of knowledge amongartisans and intellectuals.
